HOW TO DISPUTE ITEMS ON YOUR CREDIT REPORT
A few weeks ago we discussed what disputing items on your credit report meant and your rights when it comes to correcting your credit report. Now it is the time you have all been waiting for… how to dispute items from your credit report! There are a few simple steps you can follow to get these inaccuracies removed and get your numbers rising again.
STEP 1 - Determine exactly which items you would like to challenge
It is recommended to dispute information that is incorrect (700 vs 7,000) or information that is out-dated according to the statute of limitations. Start small by disputing 5 items and maybe work your way up from there.
STEP 2 - Send these dispute letters to the credit bureaus
Make sure that your dispute letters include all of the items you are disputing with the name of the creditor and account number for each. Then, explicitly state why it should be taken off your account (i.e. “that account is not mine”)
STEP 3 - Save all of the accurate records
Make sure you do not just toss away all of your written dispute letters, keep them on record! Either save them in a file on your computer and keep a printed physical copy somewhere safe. Keep track of when you sent them, who you spoke with and the new information you have learned.
STEP 4 - Follow-up
Remember, the credit bureau is busy and overwhelmed. They handle many disputes, issues, and many customers. If you do not hear back from them, you should keep checking in, following up, and pestering them to see results.
STEP 5 - Get your results from the dispute
Most bureaus should send you the results of their investigation and send you an updated credit report. If you do not get this information you can ask them to kindly send it your way again.
STEP 6 - Wait 60 days
If nothing has happened after 60 days you should repeat steps 1-5!
